New high performance window sash for historic buildings.

Period Wooden Windows & Hardware for Restoration

Smith Restoration Sash designs and produces superior reproduction wood window sash and window hardware for the restoration of historic buildings, museum quality restorations and for the construction of new period style homes. We integrate proven traditional techniques with the best modern practices and maintain a catalogue of historic patterns covering a number of building styles and design periods from the early 18th to the mid 20th century. Our mission is to build windows which scrupulously maintain the integrity and appearance of historic buildings. We form long lasting relationships with architects, restoration contractors and historic commissions. Repeat clients know to consult us early in the design process to assure a successful project.

Our Own Line of Window Hardware

"I wanted to let you know that the sash pulleys are a huge success and the state architect has decided to specify your product for all of the Oregon lighthouse restoration work. Thanks for providing a great product."

-- Richard De Wolf, Founder Arciform LLC

We make the same specialty double hung window hardware that we use ourselves available to others for use in their own projects. Over the years, we have put much time and thought into developing proprietary window hardware that meets our standard for appearance, function and ease of installation. Our unique role as both purveyor and end-user enables us to offer first hand, practical advice in selecting an integrated suite of hardware and specialized window ancillaries for your project. Among our offerings are sash pulleys, stop bead adjusters, spring bolts, storm sash hardware, Acro Numbering tacks, storm stays, American made sash cord and chain as well as Sarco glazing compounds. Click on the links at right to purchase these items through the web. (We can, of course, furnish the replicated window unit with our own reproduction window hardware installed.)

NEW PRODUCT:

    ● We now carry several highly regarded books covering the subjects of wooden window restoration, millwork and joinery. We keep a well thumbed copy of each of these titles on our bookshelf for easy reference, and can personally attest to their utility, see our How to Books section.

Historic windows with wooden storm windows.
We can furnish complete window units, including frames, sash, hardware, wood storms and screens.

    Flexible Design, Custom Detail

Smith Restoration Sash specializes in single glazed, single and double hung sash and frames. We can provide complete window units including frames, sash and wooden storm windows, furnished either glazed or open (without glass). All work is custom; we maintain no stock inventory. Because we operate on a strictly custom basis and grind new tooling as required, potential designs are unlimited. Our new sash blend with the existing original wood windows and meet the most stringent standards for historic preservation.

Painstaking attention to detail results in a reproduction window that performs as well as or better than the original. All reproduction window sash are assembled with pegged mortise and tenons. The greatest care is given to lumber selection. Heartwood, for instance, is used for those components subject to the most extreme weathering, such as the lower rails and sills. While our joinery is traditional, our manufacturing process utilizes the best of past and present sash and window making technology.

Unsolicited (& Appreciated!) Client Comment:  "Built by craftsmen in 1926, what has been added to this house since has invariably been of a poorer quality. The exception will be these window sash. They are not just beautiful, but in a time when the vast majority of people put little value on excellence, they also restore confidence in the nature and potential of the human spirit."
