Formula for Determining
Amount of Putty Required:
S x L x W x D x P x .0022 = Gallons
Window putty volume formula.

Where:

S = number of Sash

L = number of Lights per sash

W = Width of rebate in decimal inches (see drawing)

D = Depth of rebate in decimal inches (see drawing)

P = Perimeter of each light of glass in inches

Decimal equivalents for common glass rebate dimensions:

3/16" = .1875
1/4" = .250
5/16" = .3125
3/8" = .375
7/16" = .4375
1/2" = .500

For example, if your job consists of 24 - 6 light sash with a 5/16 by 3/8 glass rebate, and a 6 by 8 glass size:

24 (S) x 6 (L) x .3125 (W) x .375 (D) x 28 (P) x .0022 = 1.04 gallons needed.

To determine the number of pounds needed, multiply the result by 17. (Sarco Putty weighs approximately 17 lbs/gallon)
